Born in January 1965, he was formerly president of China Life Insurance (Group) and chairman of PICC Group, and since July 2020 has been chairman of China Merchants Group, concurrently chairing China Merchants Bank.
Background
Miao Jianmin, born in January 1965, holds a doctorate from the Central University of Finance and Economics and a master’s degree from the Graduate School of the People’s Bank of China’s Financial Research Institute. He is currently chairman of China Merchants Group Limited and chairman of China Merchants Bank Co., Ltd., and concurrently chairman of China Merchants Financial Holdings Co., Ltd. Before joining China Merchants, he served as executive director and deputy general manager of China Insurance (Holdings) Company Limited in Hong Kong, vice chairman and president of China Life Insurance (Group) Company, and chairman of The People’s Insurance Company (Group) of China Limited, among other posts.
In December 2012, Miao Jianmin, as chairman of China Life Asset Management Company Limited, wrote an article analysing the impact of population ageing on the macroeconomy, asset prices and the insurance industry. In the article he pointed out that ageing puts downward pressure on asset prices and that the long-term returns on the investment of insurance funds face the risk of decline, and he advocated adhering to asset-liability matching management for insurance, seizing the opportunities of financial reform on the basis of doing traditional investment well, actively expanding new channels such as equity investment, and increasing investment in emerging industries.
In April 2017, after Wang Yincheng, the former president of PICC Group, was taken away for investigation in January of that year and the post of PICC Group president had been vacant for several months, Miao Jianmin, then president of China Life Group, took over as deputy party secretary and president of PICC Group. In November of the same year, Wu Yan, the former party secretary and chairman of PICC Group, was transferred to become vice chairman of the National Council for Social Security Fund, and Miao Jianmin took over as party secretary and chairman of PICC Group; the post of president was not filled for some time thereafter.
In July 2020, after two and a half years at the helm of PICC Group, Miao Jianmin, then 55, moved to China Merchants Group as chairman, succeeding Li Jianhong, and concurrently became chairman of China Merchants Bank. In the same year, PICC announced that Luo Xi would succeed Miao Jianmin as the new group chairman. One PICC insider described it this way: if Miao Jianmin’s measures during his tenure were “prescribing traditional Chinese medicine,” then Luo Xi was nothing less than “administering strong medicine.”
In 2022, Miao Jianmin, as chairman of China Merchants Bank, said at the bank’s 2021 results briefing that, in terms of the macroeconomy and the banking operating environment, pressure in the first quarter of 2022 was the greatest, but that for the year as a whole he was confident that the macroeconomy would achieve growth of around 5.5% and that China Merchants Bank would maintain reasonable growth in revenue and profit.
On December 31, 2025, Miao Jianmin, as chairman of China Merchants Group, delivered a New Year message reviewing the group’s progress in four areas: transport and logistics, integrated finance, property and industrial parks, and science and technology industries. According to his message, China Merchants Group’s total profit in 2025 held firmly above the 220 billion yuan level and hit a new record, an increase of more than 30% over the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period. He said that 2026 would be a crucial year for China Merchants Group to accelerate its “third entrepreneurship” across the board and speed up building a world-class enterprise, and he proposed anchoring on the goal of becoming an “innovation-driven, international, integrated world-class enterprise” and promoting the deep integration of “technology, industry and finance.”
